Greyhound Friends of North Carolina (GFNC) – a 501(c)(3) nonprofit – is an established adoption agency providing retired racing greyhounds a path to lifelong placement into loving homes, ensuring their health and welfare, and educating the public about greyhounds as pets. We support and endorse relationships with organizations and groups which practice humane and ethical treatment of their dogs.
We want to share with you that we’ve made the heartfelt decision to step back from the newly retired greyhound adoption side of our mission while still supporting the greyhound community. Although this is a change, our Board of Directors and core volunteers remain fully committed to being here for our adopters and their hounds—whether that means helping with rehoming needs, offering guidance and counseling, or responding to emergencies. We’ll also continue to host events and partner with other groups who share our passion.
We are so proud of everything we’ve built together and so thankful for each of you who has been part of the journey. This is not an ending—it’s simply a new chapter, and we’re excited to keep walking it with you and your greyhounds by our side.
Greyhound Friends is proud and excited to celebrate the placement of over 6,900 retired racing greyhounds into loving homes since our founding in 1993. Like most adoption groups, we come from humble beginnings. We started as a satellite office of Greyhound Friends in Hopkinton, Massachusetts. In the early days, approved adopters met their new greyhounds at the Piedmont Triad International Airport!
In 1994, we created an independent organization and partnered with a local veterinarian to board a small number of greyhounds awaiting adoption. Later that same year, we leased a kennel facility in Oak Ridge, North Carolina. In 2019, GFNC closed the adoption kennel and transitioned to a foster-only organization. Much has changed, yet the core of our mission remains the same – to find the loving homes that these wonderful animals so richly deserve.
Greyhound Friends of NC has been awarded the GuideStar Nonprofit Silver Award in recognition of our commitment to transparency and accountability by GuideStar, the world’s largest source of information on nonprofits. With millions of people coming to GuideStar to learn more about nonprofit organizations, the GuideStar Exchange allows nonprofits to share a wealth of up-to-date information with GuideStar’s vast on-line audience of grantmakers and individual donors.
