Volunteer Opportunities ~ How can you Help?
Greyhound Friends Position Statement
Greyhound Friends of North Carolina is an independent, nonprofit organization that is racing neutral. We are pro adoption and dedicated to finding responsible and caring homes for retired racers and other Greyhounds in need.
Our concern is the well being of all greyhounds-before and after adoption. We support efforts to ensure that all greyhounds are treated with care and respect.
Immediate/Urgent Needs:
We currently have needs for some weeknight and weekend morning turnout volunteers. If you have a couple of hours free during the week, please consider helping us out. If you are unfamiliar with the term “turnout” please read the detailed descriptions at the bottom of this page. Basically the turnout gives our kennel guests some time outside and ensures they have a clean, dry place to sleep and wait for their forever homes. Volunteer teams cover week night shifts normally beginning at 5:30 or 6:00 until all our guests have been turned out, usually an hour and a half to two hours and weekend morning shifts beginning at 7:30 until around 9:00 or until our guests have been out and had breakfast. Turnout duties allow volunteers to get familiar with greyhounds that may have never been exposed to them or provide additional contact for folks who love greyhounds and can’t get enough of them.
If this is something you think you might be interested in or know someone who is, please contact our Kennel Volunteer Coordinator: Sally Barbour – 336-794-7696 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it for more information.
We have a variety of volunteer opportunities available at the kennel. Recurring opportunities revolve mostly around what we call “turnout” for our guests. Basically the turnout gives our kennel guests some time outside and ensures they have a clean dry place to rest and wait for their forever homes. Please see the turnout duties documents below that describe this process in full detail. Volunteer teams cover week night shifts normally beginning at 5:30 until all our guests have been turned out, usually an hour and a half to two hours. Weekend shifts start at 7:30 in the morning and run for approximately 3 hours covering Saturday and Sunday. Turnout duties allow volunteers to get familiar with greyhounds that may have never been exposed to them or provide additional contact for folks who love greyhounds and can’t get enough of them.
Kennel Duties - "Turnout"
Once you have spent some time with the greyhounds and at the kennel, you can train to become an Adoption Counselor. These volunteers work with potential adopters to determine if a greyhound is the right fit for their family and lifestyle, help them complete the application paperwork, and help them find the right dog once both counselor and adopter are comfortable with the decision to adopt. Most of our traffic for adoptions occurs on Saturday and Sunday.
If a regular shift is not what you are looking for, other opportunities for greyhound savvy volunteers include pet therapy visits, Meet and Greets at various locations, and our monthly Channel 2 News promotion. These opportunities vary in frequency and provide more flexibility.
Meet n Greet - 4th July Parade
Open House and other fundraisers during the year provide opportunities for volunteers who may prefer an event specific opportunity that does not have to include interaction with the greyhounds. Please watch our home page for current events going on and visit this page for specific needs that arise.
